The Union Advantage: A Strong Voice
By uniting with others who work as adjunct faculty at any FLCC campus, you will have a stronger voice both on the job and in your community.
Working together, union members have strength -- the strength to win better wages, deserved recognition, a better retirement, and safer workplaces.
The "union advantage" is substantial. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, full-time employees who are union members are much more likely to have benefits and pensions. And for people of color and women workers, the union impact is even greater. Women workers and people of color who are union members earn more than their non-union counterparts.
In addition to helping workers win better wages and benefits, unions help all workers by giving working families a stronger voice in three important areas: their communities, the political arena, and in the global economy. NYSUT is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the National Education Association (NEA) and the AFL-CIO. As a NYSUT member, you will receive several publications including "New York Teacher," "American Educator," and "NEA Today," which will make you aware of benefits and opportunities for NYSUT members.
As a registered member you will have a voice in establishing policies, running for union office or electing leadership.
To achieve membership status in this FLCC GRADE unit, you do need to fill out and mail a Membership Enrollment Form to Dianne Chamberlain, Secretary, 59 Huxley Way, Fairport, NY 14450 . Even though FLCC GRADE represents and bargains for ALL adjunct faculty, and ALL adjunct faculty members pay the same dues, only registered members have a voice in voting, may run for leadership, and have access to other membership benefits.
By joining together, we can build the strength needed to gain recognition in the workplace, stop the race to depress wages, and improve the ability of all adjuncts to do their best among students and colleagues at Finger Lakes Community College.
